About this character counter

This character counter shows the length and structure of your text as you type or paste it — no button to press. It reports the number of characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, lines, and paragraphs, along with estimated reading and speaking times. You can also set an optional character limit to see how much room you have left. Everything runs in your browser.

What does the character counter count?

Every keystroke updates six core figures: total characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences, lines, and paragraphs. Reading and speaking time are derived from the word count. The optional limit adds a live "used / limit" readout and a remaining or over-limit figure.

How to count characters in text

Type directly into the box, or copy text from anywhere and paste it in. The counts update immediately. To count a portion of a longer document, paste just that portion. To start over, use Clear Text. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it works offline once the page has loaded.

Characters with spaces vs. without spaces

"Characters" counts everything you entered, including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. "No spaces" counts the same text after removing all whitespace (spaces, tabs, and newlines). Some length limits — for example certain database fields or metadata tags — are measured with spaces, while a few writing guidelines quote a no-spaces figure, so both are shown.

How are words counted?

A word is any run of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Leading, trailing, and repeated spaces are ignored, so they never inflate the count. For example, "Hello     world" counts as two words, and an empty box counts as zero.

How are sentences counted?

Sentences are estimated from sentence-ending punctuation — periods, question marks, and exclamation marks. Runs of punctuation such as "!!!" count once, not three times. This is a practical heuristic, not a grammar engine: abbreviations like "Dr." or decimal points can occasionally be miscounted, so treat the sentence figure as a close approximation.

Reading time and speaking time estimates

Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading. Speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are rounded to whole minutes, and any non-empty text under a minute simply shows "less than 1 min". They are estimates and will vary with the material and the reader.

Why character counts matter

Length limits show up everywhere: form fields, meta titles and descriptions, headlines, social posts, SMS messages, product descriptions, ad copy, bios, and email subject lines. Knowing the exact count — and how close you are to a limit — helps you trim or expand text to fit before you publish it. Writers and editors also use character and word counts to track progress and keep sections balanced.

A quick example

The text Hello world! This is ToolLora. contains 30 characters (26 without spaces), 5 words, and 2 sentences, across 1 line and 1 paragraph.

Frequently asked questions

What is a character counter?

A character counter is a tool that measures the length of a piece of text — how many characters, words, sentences, lines, and paragraphs it contains — and updates as you type or paste.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes. The "Characters" figure includes spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. A separate "No spaces" figure shows the count after all whitespace is removed.

How do I count characters without spaces?

It's shown automatically. The "No spaces" card removes every space, tab, and newline from your text and counts what's left.

How are words counted?

A word is any group of non-whitespace characters between spaces or line breaks. Extra spaces and blank lines don't add to the count.

How are sentences counted?

By looking for sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?), treating repeated marks as one ending. It's a heuristic, so abbreviations and decimals can occasionally be miscounted.

Can I set a character limit?

Yes. Enter any positive number in "Character limit (optional)", or pick a preset. You'll see a live "used / limit" readout and how many characters remain — or how many you're over. Typing past the limit is never blocked.

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by about 200 words per minute, rounded to whole minutes. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute. Both are estimates.

Is this character counter free?

Yes — completely free, with no account and no limits on how often you use it.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to ToolLora's servers or stored anywhere.
