Compression settings
Compression modeGood quality with useful size reduction.
Stronger compression can reduce image quality. Try Balanced first and use Smaller File when file size matters more.
PNG optimization works by reducing the number of colors used — Best Quality keeps full color detail, while Balanced and Smaller File apply color reduction for a real size decrease. For photos, converting to WebP or JPG usually compresses much further.
Transparent areas will use this color, since JPG can't keep transparency.
Advanced: reduce dimensions too

About this image compressor
This tool reduces the file size of JPG, PNG, and WebP images entirely in your browser, using the HTML canvas element to re-encode your image. Nothing is ever uploaded to a server — compression happens on your own device.
How to compress an image online
Upload an image, choose a compression mode — or fine-tune quality yourself — and click "Compress Image." The tool shows the actual output file size once it's generated, so you can compare it against the original before downloading.
How image compression works
For JPG and WebP, compression works by discarding some visual detail that's harder for the eye to notice, controlled by a quality setting: lower quality means smaller files but more visible artifacts. This tool re-encodes your image at the quality level you choose and reports the real resulting file size.
Lossy vs lossless image compression
JPG and WebP use lossy compression, which can shrink file size significantly by removing some image data. PNG is lossless, meaning it preserves every pixel exactly, which is great for graphics and screenshots but leaves much less room for size reduction — converting a PNG to JPG or WebP is often the more effective way to shrink a photo.
How to compress JPG images
Upload your JPG, pick a compression mode like Balanced or Smaller File (or set a custom quality), and compress. Lowering quality reduces file size at the cost of some visual detail — Balanced is a reasonable starting point for most photos.
How to compress PNG images
PNG compression is lossless, so this tool can still re-encode a PNG, but don't expect dramatic size reductions the way you would with JPG or WebP. If your PNG doesn't need transparency, converting it to JPG or WebP as the output format will usually produce a much smaller file.
How to compress WebP images
WebP supports both lossy and lossless modes and often produces smaller files than JPG at similar visual quality. You can upload a WebP image directly, or convert another format to WebP as the output to take advantage of its stronger compression.
How much image quality should I use?
Balanced (around 75–80%) works well for most everyday images. Use Maximum Quality when visual fidelity matters most, such as print or detailed photography, and Smaller File when file size matters more than every last visual detail, such as for faster-loading web pages.
Does compressing an image change its dimensions?
No, by default the compressed image keeps the exact same width and height as the original — only the file size and, for lossy formats, some visual detail changes. If you also want to reduce dimensions, use the "Reduce dimensions too" option, or use the dedicated Image Resizer for more precise control over width and height.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression happens locally in your browser using canvas — your image is never sent to ToolLora's servers or any third party.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image compressor free?
Yes — completely free, with no account and no limits on how many images you compress.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression happens locally in your browser — your image is never uploaded to ToolLora's servers.
What formats can I compress?
JPG, PNG, and WebP are supported for both input and output.
Can I compress JPG images?
Yes. JPG compresses especially well — choose a compression mode or a custom quality level to control the size/quality tradeoff.
Can I compress PNG images?
Yes, though PNG is lossless, so reductions are typically smaller than JPG or WebP. Converting to JPG or WebP as the output format usually compresses further.
Can I compress WebP images?
Yes. WebP is supported for both upload and output, and often compresses better than JPG at similar quality.
Does compression reduce image quality?
For JPG and WebP, stronger compression can introduce visible artifacts. Maximum Quality keeps this minimal, while Smaller File trades some quality for a smaller file. PNG stays lossless regardless of mode.
Does compression change image dimensions?
Not by default — dimensions stay exactly the same. You can optionally reduce dimensions too under "Advanced," or use the Image Resizer for full control over width and height.
Why is my compressed image sometimes larger?
Browser re-encoding can occasionally produce a larger file, especially at high quality settings or when the original was already well compressed. If that happens, try a lower quality or a more efficient format like WebP.
Can I download the compressed image?
Yes. Click "Download Compressed Image" after compressing to save the file directly from your browser.
